Ben at the Riviera

ON THE way out of the diner, Ben heard Eli asking Naomi for an extra bottle of water. He thought he heard “The Bison needs extra water if he’s going to be climbing out in the heat.” Bison? What was that, like a buffalo? He wasn’t sure he knew anything about buffalo except they were large, covered in shaggy brown hair, and had been slaughtered during the attempts at genocide the Americans called the Indian Wars. Was this some sort of political name?

But then he caught a glimpse of his reflection in the window of a taco joint near the Riviera building. Oh my God. When had he let his hair get quite so out of control? He reached down, stroked the beard. He was starting to stroke his beard, in public, like half the old men in Tel Aviv! What was it Eli said? Jesus H. Christ. What did that even mean? Did Jesus have a middle name?

He was a mess. He had let himself go and become a shaggy mess. Ben reached into the back pocket of his jeans for an elastic. He usually kept one there for painting because paint got everywhere and it was a pain to pick it out of your hair. He bundled his hair back out of the way. He would have to deal with personal grooming later.
